ART@WORK

2011

Picture
The Automatic Teller Machine  -
Teller From tallier – one who keeps a tally/         teller - someone who tells a story/  Fortune  . The chance happening of fortunate or adverse events; luck/  Fortune  A large sum of money/ Bank . A supply or stock for future or emergency use/ Bank . The funds of a gambling establishment.

This is a body of work that arose out of an Artist in Residence at Ulster Bank, Roscommon, which was part of the Art@Work scheme run by Roscommon County Council Arts Office.
The work revolves around an ATM based on the old fortune telling machines from amusement arcades, playing with the idea of"bank tellers" and "fortune tellers" as well as the multiple definitions of "fortune".
Based on the animals of the old coinage, together with the intricacies of the old bank notes, the series of prints looks at the aesthetics of our old currency and how this affects the value we place in it.

The prints were made into"Cards of Fortune", taking the characteristics of the animals from the Chinese and other  Zodiacs
