An Unsettling Year 2020

As we navigate the Global Pandemic within the radical disruption of the Fourth Industrial Revolution the boundaries are blurring between the physical, digital, and biological. Discontent is growing in this winner takes all world with lack of individual agency, extremist ideologies, inequality, and unrealistic expectations. We are at the mercy of algorithms for information and opportunities. These are trained on historic datasets and inherently biased against women, leaving us treading time for the most part. This work is a step back to the start of the First Industrial Revolution, using the technology (Greek, techne- art of craft) of the first animation device to describe a revolution – the plants emerging over the revolution which is the earth’s orbit of the sun. These plants have been bound up in our culture since the times of the ancient Brehon Laws, with their own inherent language of symbolism. Among these pants that are constantly turning, yet constantly the same, the women mark time. Arts Council Covid Response Award.
